Ranking the Top 8 early-season women’s college basketball tournaments in 2021

Here are the top tournaments in store for the beginning of the 2021-22 season

All rankings are from the World Exposure Report Top 25 Preseason Rankings

1. WER Invitational

  • Date: Nov. 12-13
  • Location: Milton H. Johnson Center in Marianna, Florida
  • Tournament Field: No. 1 Chipola College, No. 12 Georgia Highlands, No. 18 Gulf Coast State, and No. 10 Seward County
  • Player to Watch: Ta'Shonna Wright-Gaskins (Chipola)
  • Comments: Three out of four teams in the inaugural field appeared in last season NJCAA National Tournament. Chipola enters the tournament with four wins by 40 or more points. 
    All games will be broadcast through WER Network (ww.werinvitational).

2. West Palm Beach Invitational

  • Date: Dec. 20-21
  • Location: Kesier University and Palm Beach State
  • Tournament Field: West Virginia, Texas Tech, No. 16 South Florida, Clemson, Dayton, No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast, Ole Miss, Michigan State, No. 22 LSU, and High Point
  • Player to Watch: Bethy Mununga (South Florida)
  • Comments: South Florida will play against West Virginia on Dec. 20 and against Mississippi on Dec. 21. The Mountaineers finished last season with a 22-7 record and made it to the second round in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels advanced to the WNIT championship game where they fell to Rice. The Bulls starting five (Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeau, Bethy Mununga, Elena Tsineke, Sydni Harvey, and Elisa Pinzan) is one of the best in the nation.

3. Daytona Beach Invitational

  • Date: Nov. 26-27
  • Location: Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona Beach
  • Tournament Field: Georgia, Dayton, No. 18 Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, Marquette, Illinois, No. 19 Notre Dame, Michigan, Oregon State 
  • Players to Watch: Sonia Citron (Notre Dame) and Jalynn Gregory (Middle Tennessee State)

4. Battle 4 Atlantis

  • Date: Nov. 20-22
  • Location: Paradise Island, Bahamas
  • Tournament Field: No. 1 South Carolina, Buffalo, No. 2 Connecticut, Oklahoma, No. 14 Oregon, No. 16 South Florida, Minnesota, and Syracuse.
  • Players to Watch: Paige Bueckers (UConn), Azzi Fudd (UConn), and Raven Johnson (South Carolina)

5. Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase

  • Date: Dec. 19
  • Location: Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT
  • Tournament Field: No. 2 UConn, No. 5 Louisville, No. 23 Baylor, Michigan
  • Players to Watch: Payton Verhulst (Louisville) and Naz Hillmon (Michigan)

6. Cancun Challenge

  • Date: Nov. 25-27
  • Location: Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya
  • Tournament Field: (Mayan Tournament) Arizona State, No. 23 Baylor, Fordham, and Houston (Riviera Tournament) UCF, Idaho State, No. 21 Iowa, Seton Hall, Toledo, and USC
  • Players to Watch: Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Seton Hall), NaLyssa Smith (Baylor), and Addison O'Grady (Iowa)

7. Paradise Jam

  • Date: Nov. 23-28
  • Location: St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Tournament Field: Arizona, Northwestern, Rutgers, No. 13 Texas A&M, DePaul, Pittsburg, South Dakota, and Vanderbilt
  • Players to Watch: Jada Malone and Destiny Pitts (Texas A&M)

8. Gulf Coast Showcase

  • Date: Nov. 26-28
  • Location: Hertz Arena in Estero, FL
  • Tournament Field: South Dakota State, UMass, UCLA, Kent State, No. 10 Iowa State, Charlotte, Penn State, St. John’s
  • Players to Watch: Gina Conti (UCLA)
