No. 4 Ohio State Records Fifth Sweep of Season, Beating VCU
RICHMOND, Va. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (7-0) completed its fifth sweep of the season (25-15, 25-23, 25-17), beating host VCU (4-5) on Saturday morning.
How it Happened
Ohio State took an early 5-2 lead in the opening set before VCU came back to tie the set at six and take its lone lead of the set at 7-6. The Buckeyes responded with six-consecutive points on the floor to force a VCU timeout as OSU held a 12-7 lead. The Rams would get no closer than four, 14-10, for the remainder of the first set as the Buckeyes pushed the margin to 18-10 and wrapped up the set with three-straight points. Ohio State took set one by a 25-15 margin on a bad set by the Rams.
The second set featured six ties before either team hit 10 points. VCU built its largest lead of the match, 14-10, but OSU scored the next four points to tie the set at 14. The Rams would lead until a service ace from Mac Podraza tied the set at 19. Ohio State took a 21-20 lead, its first since leading 2-1, on a block by Arica Davis and Emily Londot. Back-to-back Buckeye points forced a VCU timeout with Ohio State leading 23-21. The Rams scored twice out of the timeout to tie the match at 23 before back-to-back Gabby Gonzales kills sealed the set win for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes began the third set with the first four points and extended the lead to 9-1 with five-straight points on the floor. OSU capped the run with a Kylie Murr service ace. The Rams responded with a 6-2 run to cut the Buckeyes lead to 11-7. Ohio State led 15-10 at the media timeout. Following the media timeout, OSU scored four of the next five points to force a Rams timeout as the Buckeyes lead was 19-11. The teams traded points for the remainder of the match as Gonzales wrapped up the match with her 16th kill.
