DENVER--- On Friday, the unexpected happened as both the No.1 seed Augustana and the No.2 seed Saint Anselm lost and were sent into the elimination bracket.

Reigning champions come up short

No. 5 Biola University took down the defending champions No.1 Augstuana on Friday afternoon. Scoreless until the fourth inning, Biola’s Kayla Neff had herself a homerun to kick off the success at bat. To follow, Augustana’s Amanda Dickmeyer singled down left field but couldn’t convert it into a run for her team. The Vikings only had four hits in total throughout the game, and two of them came from Dickmeyer. Another single from the Viking put her in a position to score in the bottom of the fifth but again, was left on base. After Augustana was unable to score for the innings to follow, the Eagles knocked in two more runs to stretch the score to 3-0.

Biola will now play Saturday at 6 p.m. Augustana will play No. 3 Grand Valley at 3:30 p.m (ET). on Saturday. If the Vikings come out victorious, they will play the winner of West Texas A&M and Saint Anselm on Saturday evening.

The upsets continue

Saint Anselm scored first. Momentum began in its direction, as the No. 2 seed. But quickly, West Texas A&M reminded everyone to never doubt a six seed. After trailing 0-2, a seven run third inning was the difference maker for the Lady Buffs. It was a constant sharing at bat that granted so much success for West Texas in the third inning. No home runs, but passing the bat and consistent hitting that kept putting points on the board. After Saint Anselm won on a walk off on Thursday, the tables turned and dominance was in the hands of its opponent instead.

Despite starting the game with two runs, the Hawks couldn’t score until Kat Stackrow hit a homerun in the fifth. Just an inning later, the Lady Buffs added two more runs on the game, knocking the score to 9-3 by the final out in the seventh. With no ability to mirror the success the Lady Buffs had on Friday, the Hawks will play No.4 North Georgia on Saturday at 1 p.m. West Texas A&M will face the winner of Augustana and Grand Valley State.
