The Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College swept the Lady Royals of Lake Region State College in Mon-Dak conference play. After defeating Lake Region in Devils Lake earlier in the season, Dawson won back to back home games on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Head coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. on the sweep, “Lake Region is always a tough team to defeat. The history between us shows really how good they can be, and that is why you don’t sleep on them. They have a well-coached program and we respect it. Our women are so tenacious on defense. Once we smell blood, we are in a frenzy and it’s hard to overcome. We trained so hard in the pre-season, they put in the work for the full 40 minutes of play. We’re just blessed to be in the position we are in this season.”

Dawson won the first of the back to back series 75-59 Wednesday night. The Lady Bucs had 18 steals that led to 33 points. Ashya Klopfenstein recorded her 8th double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, along with 3 steals. Tamiya Francis scored 10 points, had 3 assists and 2 steals. Brynn Jolma added 10 points. Brianna Bergum collected a game high 6 steals, along with 7 points and 5 rebounds. Sarah Billmayer dished out a game high 4 assists.

In the second matchup, Dawson continued their defensive rampage with 19 steals, converting to 39 points. Lake Region had 32 turnovers. Dawson also outrebounded the Lady Royals 47-35, outscored their bench 31-17, and edged them on second chance points 27-7. All 12 suited up Lady Bucs scored with point guard Tamiya Francis leading the game with a career high of 28 points (5-10 3 pointers), along with 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block. Last week’s Mon-Dak Conference Player of the Week, Ashya Klopfenstein, recorded a game high 8 rebounds, along with 7 points, 2 assists and 3 steals. Brianna Bergum had 4 steals, along with 5 rebounds.

Dawson is now 9-3 in conference, and will be on the road on February 28th when they visit Williston State College for their second matchup of the season.
