SEC Women's Basketball Preview- 1/24/2021

No. 8 Texas A&M at Missouri
The Aggies  are coming off a 69-41 victory over No. 14 Mississippi. In the win, they held the Bulldogs to a season low in points, including a three-point opening quarter that set the tone for the remainder of the game.

 Aaliyah Wilson is showing out this season. is breaking out this season. She leads the team in ppg (14.5), in steals (28) and blocks (12).

Missouri enters the contest with a  5-4 overall with a 1-3 mark in SEC play. The squad features a trio of double-digit scorers, including Aijha Blackwell (15.0 ppg), Hayley Frank (13.7 ppg) and LaDazhia Williams (12.8 ppg). Blackwell serves as the team’s primary presence on the glass, hauling in 9.3 rebounds per game, while Shug Dickson dictates the offense with 3.7 assists per contest.

A&M leads the all-time series 19-10 over the Tigers, having won 16 of the last 19 matchups.

 The Aggies are 6-7 in Columbia, dating back to the first matchup in series history on Jan. 29, 1997.

A&M head coach Gary Blair holds a 20-6 record against the Tigers throughout his career, and a 10-3 record against Tigers’ head coach Robin Pingeton.

No. 4 South Carolina at LSU

The Gamecocks are the lone undefeated team in SEC play at 6-0. Four starters are averaging double figure scoring - Zia Cooke (15.9 ppg), Aliyah Boston (14.4 ppg), Destanni Henderson (12.3 ppg) and Victaria Saxton (10.6 ppg), while Boston is averaging 11.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. Henderson averages 5.8 assists per game.

LSU is 6-6 on the season and is 4-2 following Monday night’s win at Missouri, 66-64.

Pointer leads LSU with 16.1 points, 4.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while her points average jumps to 20.2 in SEC action. Aifuwa leads the squad with 8.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game. She is also the second leading scorer on the team with 11.6 points per game and 12.7 in SEC play. In conference play Young is averaging 13.8 points per game and shooting 52.2 percent from the field.

This will be the 37th meeting between LSU and South Carolina. LSU leads the series, 22-14, with a 12-5 lead in Baton Rouge. The Gamecocks have won the last 10 games in the series.

Florida at Ole Miss
Ole Miss enters the game sporting a 7-4 overall record which includes a 1-4 mark in conference action. The Rebels have dropped contests against LSU, nationally-ranked Mississippi State, Georgia and Missouri and collected their lone conference win over Auburn. Maryland transfer Shakira Austin has been a force in her first season, averaging 17.9 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 50.3 percent from the floor. New faces like Austin are a major key in the Rebels' game plans as newcomers account for over 75 percent of their offensive production. Donneta Johnson, a transfer from Georgia, averages double figures at 13.5. Johnson and Austin are the only players on the roster to have started all 11 games so far this season.

Freshman Snudda Collins ranks third nationally among freshmen in three-point shooting at her season percentage of 44.9 (22-of-49), and she leads among freshmen who have played at least 10 games.

Gators' Briggs has been remarkable this season. Lavender Briggs scored a career-high 41 points at No. 17 Arkansas, notching the fourth-highest single game total in program history and the highest of any SEC player this season. Becoming the fourth player in all of NCAA Division I to eclipse the 40-point plateau this season, Briggs set new career highs in field goals (17) and three-pointers made (6) and led the Gators’ spirited charge vs. Arkansas. Briggs’ 41 points were the most scored by a sophomore in program history and most by any Gator since former First Team All-SEC selection Ronni Williams scored 43 against Vanderbilt in 2017. Through her first six SEC games, Briggs is averaging 23.2 points per game against the nation’s top talent.

The overall series history sways in favor of Florida as the Gators own a 23-19 edge. Each of the last seven meetings has been decided by 10 or fewer points with Ole Miss posting a 4-3 record in that span. Under Newbauer, Florida is 3-3 against Ole Miss and has claimed the last two meetings. Two of the last four meetings have occurred in the SEC Tournament with each team posting a win.

No. 12 Kentucky at No. 22 Tennessee

Kentucky boasts an 11-3 record this season, including a 4-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The Wildcats are coming off their third road win of the season, earning a 76-71 triumph over Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, in a rescheduled game on Thursday evening.

Chasity Patterson continues to lead the nation in steals, forcing 55 this season, including 15 through six league games. The senior guard is also averaging 9.7 points per league game and 3.0 rebounds per league game. Both Green and Rhyne Howard are averaging double figures during conference clashes, as Howard averages 25 points per league game and Green averages 10.5 points per league game.

The Lady Vols are led by two remarkable players (Davis and Burrell). 

Senior Rennia Davis has raised her game in SEC play, averaging 17.5 ppg. and 8.5 rpg. while shooting 55.8 percent from the field. Those marks rank her eighth, eighth and fourth, respectively, among her peers.

Junior Rae Burrell also has elevated her play in conference action, sitting just behind Rennia Davis at 17.0 ppg. with a 50.9 shooting percentage. Those marks position her tenth and eighth in the SEC. She also is tied for ninth in threes made per game at 1.8.

Sunday’s game will mark the 70th meeting between the two programs. The Wildcats trail the Lady Volunteers in the series, 55-14, and in Knoxville, 25-4. However, UK has won four of the last six meetings in the series, including the last three straight, which is the longest streak Kentucky has held over Tennessee in the 69-game stretch.  

Auburn at Alabama
Sunday’s matchup will be the 93rd between the rival Tide and Tigers. Alabama won both of last year’s meetings, first with a 75-48 decision on the Plains, which was the largest margin of victory against Auburn on its home court. The Tide then followed that up with a 68-64 win in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide stands at 11-2 overall and 4-2 against league opponents heading into Sunday's game.

The Tide is led by its trio of seniors in Jasmine Walker, Jordan Lewis and Ariyah Copeland. Each averages double-digit points with Walker at 19.8 ppg, Lewis at 16.9 ppg and Copeland at 14.7 ppg, while Walker also pulls in a team-best 10.2 rebounds per contest.

Auburn comes into Sunday's game with a 5-8 season record and an 0-5 mark in SEC play.
