ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Junior Anthony Roberts has received a transfer waiver from the NCAA and will be immediately eligible to play for St. Bonaventure during the 2020-21 season, it was announced Friday.

The 6-foot-4 guard played his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Kent State, appearing in 61 games including 21 starts. This past season, he took over a starting role with the Golden Flashes, averaging 12.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting better than 44 percent from the floor and nearly 37 percent from distance (49-134).

Roberts joins perhaps the most impressive junior class in the nation, becoming the ninth member of that group along with Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference selection Kyle Lofton (14.1 ppg, 6.0 apg), multi-time All-Conference pick Osun Osunniyi (10.8 ppg, 8.4 rpg), star guards Dominick Welch (11.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Jaren Holmes (11.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg) along with veteran guard Alpha Okoli (45 career games) as well as redshirt transfer Jalen Adaway (8.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg at Miami (OH) and newcomers in guard Eddie Creal (15.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg at Moberly CC) and center Jalen Shaw (11.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg at Triton CC).

This past year, Roberts reached 17 or more points nine times including 12 or more points in seven of his team’s final eight games.

The Detroit native was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team following his collegiate debut where he averaged 5.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 2018-19.

He is a product of Henry Ford High School in the Motor City where he averaged 22 points, six rebounds and five assists as a senior. He began his high school career at Detroit Western International, helping his team to a state championship as a freshman and a district title as a sophomore. Roberts also earned selection to the Detroit Free Press All-Detroit First Team and also was a Bank Hoops Class B All-State selection.

Roberts adds to a talented new crop of Bonnies, boosting what is an already impressive roster of returners. Sophomores Justin Winston (8.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and Alejandro Vasquez (6.3 ppg) return after earning key minutes last year while Quintin Metcalf, a 6-8 power forward, joins walk-on guards Josh Bell and Jermaine Taggart as the freshman members of the roster. The Bonnies return all five starters from last season’s 19-win squad.
