The women’s basketball team at the University of Connecticut is one of the most successful in all of sports. The Huskies started playing games in 1974 and in 1985 they hired Geno Auriemma.

Since 1991, they’ve appeared in 20 Final Fours and captured a record 11 NCAA titles. They have won 18 Big East Conference tournament championships and 7 AAC conference tournament championships. 

And with all of that success, they have produced some of the best players to ever play the game. 

Since, 1996, UConn has had the AP National Player of the Year 11 times. From 2008 to 2019, the Huskies had 29 All-Americans-an average of almost 2.5 per year.
 

No. 10: Katie Lou Samuelson (2015-2019)

Samuelson scored a career-high 40 points against South Florida, she also set the NCAA single-game record for most three-pointers made without a miss, with 10. Her 119 made three-pointers in 2016-17 season is the the second-highest in school history. She also was named two-time AAC Player of the year, AP All-American, and won 1 National Championship. 

No. 9: Swin Cash (1998-2002)

Cash is a two-time National Champion, and helped UConn to an undefeated 39-0 season in 2002. She also was named AP All-American and NCAA Tournament MOP in 2002.

No. 8: Kerry Bascom (1987-1991)

Bascom was Geno's first blue-chip recruit. She helped UConn win their first regular-season Big East Title, their first Big East Tournament championship, and their first NCAA Final Four trip. 

No. 7: Nykesha Sales (1994-1998)

Sales helped UConn to an undefeated season and a NCAA Championship in 1995. She was named to the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Kodak All-American Team and Big East Player of the Year. Nykesha Sales has the single-game scoring record: 46 points vs. Stanford on Dec. 21, 1997.

No. 6: Rebecca Lobo (1991-1995)

Lobo was the first UConn player to win the Naismith, Wade Trophy, and AP Player of the Year awards.  She led the Huskies to their first NCAA Championship in 1995. Lobo still holds the UConn record for career double-doubles, posting 59 in her career.  Rebecca Lobo had a 11-for-11 performance against Iona in 1994.

No. 5: Tina Charles (2006-2010)

Charles is a two-time National Champion and won the John R. Wooden award, the Naismith Player of the Year Award, the AP National Player of the Year award, and the Big East Player of the Year award in 2010. She was also a three-time All-American.

No. 4: Sue Bird (1998-2022)

Bird is a two-time National Champion, a three-time winner of the Lieberman award and twice an All-American. She also won the Naismith, Wade Trophy, AP National Player of the Year awards.

No. 3: Breanna Stewart (2012-16)

Stewie is the only Uconn Player to win three Naismith awards and three AP National Player of Year awards. She is also a two-time winner of the Wade Trophy, a three-time AP All-American, a three-time AAC Player of the Year and two-time winner of the Wooden Award. In addition, she won 4 National Championships at UConn. She ended her career as the No. 3 scorer in UConn History with 2, 676 total points. 

No. 2: Maya Moore (2007-11)

Moore is a two-time National Champion, a four-time All-American, a three-time winner of the Wade Trophy and a two-time winner of the Wooden and Naismith award. She was also a three-time Big East Player of the Year and won the AP National Player of the Year twice. She led the team in scoring in each of the four seasons she was there, a feat no other player has accomplished for UConn. Maya is 10th all-time in scoring in NCAA Division I history and owns the UConn scoring record having totaled 3,036 points over her career. She also owns UConn records for career scoring average with 19.7 points per-game, and the Huskies single-season scoring record, totaling 868 points in the 2010-11 season for a 22.8 points-per-game average.

No. 1: Diana Taurasi (2000-2004)

Taurasi is a three-time National Champion, a three-time All-American, a two-time winner of the Naismith award, a two-time Big East Player of the Year, and a two-time winner of the Lieberman award. She also won the Wade Trophy and the AP National Player of the Year Award. 
 

Honorable Mention:  Renee Montgomery (2005-2009), Jennifer Rizzotti (1992-1996), Napheesa Collier (2015-2019).

The next question is: Can Paige Bueckers become the best player to ever wear the UConn uniform? Bueckers is one of the five signees in UConn's 2020 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 2 in the country. Bueckers will be joined by Mir Mclean, Aaliyah Edwards, Nika Muhl, and Piath Gabriel.  UConn is currently ranked No. 2 in the World Exposure Report Team Recruiting Rankings, with three verbals commits in  Amari DeBerry (No. 8), Saylor Poffenbarger (No. 17), and Caroline Ducharme (No. 20).
