Four finalists for 2020 NCAA Division I World Exposure Women's Head Coach of the Year announced

The 2020 NCAA Division 1  World Exposure  Women’s College Basketball Head Coach of the Year award finalists were announced today by World Exposure Report and include Dawn  Plitzuweit (University of South Dakota), Karl Smesko (Florida Gulf Coast University), Amaka Agugua-Hamilton (Missouri State University), and Cori Close (UCLA). Award winner will be announced Wednesday, March 25th. 

About the finalists:
Dawn Plitzuweit, University of South Dakota

Dawn is the fastest coach in Summit League history to reach 100 wins, doing so in 124 games. She has surpassed 20 wins in all four seasons she's been at South Dakota, the only coach in school history to surpass 20 wins in three or more consecutive seasons. In addition, she is a three-time Summit League Coach of the Year. 


Karl Smesko, Florida Gulf Coast University
Smesko is 554-122 (.820) in his career. Since 2011-12 alone, he has led the Eagles to a 137-5 record (.965) in conference play with five undefeated regular seasons. He is On pace to become NCAA Division I all-time leader in winning percentage at the end of 2020-21 season and his program is one of only three schools with 9-straight seasons with 25+ wins (UConn, Baylor and FGCU).

Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, Missouri State University
After guiding the Lady Bears to a historic season, Amaka Agugua-Hamilton is the second first-year coach in Missouri Valley Conference history to earn Coach of the Year and brings the award to Missouri State for a sixth time. MSU's 26 wins this season represent a school and conference record for a first-year head coach, and only 33 rookie head coaches have ever won 26-plus games at the Division I level. Additionally, this season marks the first time in league history that a team has won an outright regular season title with a first-year head coach at the helm.

Cori Close, UCLA

Close led her team to a 2nd place finish in the Pac-12 with a 26-5 record. Last season, she was recognized  as the media Pac-12 Coach of the Year after leading the UCLA women's basketball team to a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12.
