FCSAA Women's Tournament results- Northwest Florida Claims FCSAA Tournament Title in Thriller

With two seconds remaining in overtime, Northwest Florida’s Reneasha Payton made a layup and Gulf Coast’s final heave fell short as the Raiders claimed the 2020 FCSAA/Region VIII Women’s Tournament title, 57-55, Saturday in Raider Arena. 

The tournament title was the first for Northwest Florida since 1996 and snapped a streak of four consecutive championships by Gulf Coast. It is the fourth-ever tournament championship for the Raiders.

En route to being named tournament MVP, Rayven Peeples scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Payton finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Chanaya Pinto had nine points and 13 rebounds, while Fapou Semebene chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Panhandle Conference Player of the Year Ahlana Smith led Gulf Coast with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Raiders will learn their opponent in the NJCAA National Tournament on Monday at 10:30 a.m. on the NJCAA Selection Show set to air on NJCAA Championship TV. The tournament is set for March 17-21 in Rip Griffin Arena in Lubbock, Texas.- Written by Wes Johnson.

Reneasha Payton led all scorers with 18 points, including four triples. Rayven Peeples was 7-of-9 from the field to finish with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Chanaya Pinto also turned in a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Venessa Woodfolk chipped in with 10 points in just 11 minutes of action.

With the victory, Northwest Florida will face rival Gulf Coast in the finals. It will be the second straight meeting between the teams in the championship game and the third time squaring off in the last five years.

NWF scored in double figures as No. 5 Northwest Florida came away with a 77-54 win over No. 22 Eastern Florida Thursday in Raider Arena in the first round of the FCSAA/Region VIII State Tournament.

The Raiders (25-4) led from start to finish building their advantage to 26 points early in the fourth quarter. Rayven Peeples led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and finished with 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Gabriela Sales had 14 followed by Fapou Semebene with 13. Chanaya Pinto and Reneasha Payton had 11 points each.
